A recent gamesindustry.biz post has revealed some information on the UK chart-topping sales for Spider-Man.
Throughout 2018, Far Cry 5 has been holding the title of fastest selling game of the year in the UK, but Insomniac’s Spider-Man has already overtaken it since its release on Friday, September 7th. This is an incredibly impressive and somewhat surprising feat, with Far Cry 5 having the advantage of being released on Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC; whereas Spider-Man is a PlayStation 4 exclusive, narrowing its potential player base significantly.
Spider-Man has also managed to eclipse critical darling God of War’s sales by almost double. There’s no doubt that Sony will be feeling extremely satisfied with their exclusive software output this year.
Spider-Man is also the fastest selling individual format game since the PlayStation 4 version of first-person shooter juggernaut Call of Duty: WWII was released last November, which managed to comfortably sit above 2017’s top sellers earning $1billion in sales.
It is also currently the fastest selling Marvel branded video game in history, trumping LEGO Marvel Super Heroes’ sales by “a big margin”. Despite this, it was still unable to top Batman: Arkham Knight as the fastest selling superhero game of the generation in the UK.
This could be attributed to less digital sales in 2015, however, (the year Arkham Knight was released), with UK charts only taking physical copies into account. Arkham Knight was also the conclusion to Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham series, which had managed to garner a larger fanbase over its years on the market compared to Spider-Man’s newly acquired fan following.
It seems likely that a lot of Spider-Man’s current financial success can be linked to Sony’s aggressive marketing pushes since 2016 (including a decorated subway train), but fortunate timing also plays a huge role, with the title being released just a few months after box office record breaker Avengers: Infinity War.
The video game market is also largely devoid of competition in the superhero genre, and the pedigree Insomniac games have built in previous years with titles such as Ratchet & Clank and Resistance surely turned some heads.
